CHRISSIE HAMMOND
GRIZABELLA

Chrissie’s musical career spans nearly three decades and includes extensive experience in live performance, studio recording, musical theatre, television and radio. Raised in Australia, her musical debut was in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar in which she played the role of Mary Magdalene. During this time, the band Air Supply was founded along with fellow musicians Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock. After Jesus Christ Superstar, Chrissie was offered a record contract with Polygram Records and formed the band Cheetah. Their first album was released worldwide through Atlantic USA, CBS-Europe/UK, Columbia-Japan and the band toured internationally, appearing with artists such a U2, Jackson Brown, Neil Young and Gary Moore. Chrissie has performed on numerous TV and radio shows worldwide including MTV USA. Cheetah had three national top 5 hits and disbanded in 1987. She then joined keyboard legend Rick Wakeman as lead vocalist. For the next nine years she toured Russia, South America, Japan, Europe and the UK (including Ronnie Scotts) with Rick and recorded eleven albums with him. Chrissie and Rick reunited in 2005 to perform in the Lonnie Donegan Tribute Concert at the Albert Hall, with artists including Van Morrison, Mark Knophler, Joe Cocker and Roger Daltry. In musical theatre, Chrissie was one of the principal soloists in the original London cast of Smokey Joe’s Café at the Prince of Wales Theatre. She subsequently created the role of Devil Woman in the new musical Harry’s Web at the Theatre Royal, Windsor. Chrissie achieved great personal success when she joined the London production of Cats as Grizabella. She was proud to play the role for two and a half years and was thrilled to be asked to stay for its last memorable performance on its 21st birthday at the New London Theatre. She then joined the London production of Chicago where she played the role of Mama Morton at the Adelphi Theatre. Chrissie resurrected the roles of Grizabella again for the 2002/4 European/UK tour of Cats and Mama Morton at the Adelphi in 2005/6 and in between took time out to write and record her own material. In Australia Chrissie co-hosted and performed frequently on the music show Countdown (ABC), and performed on many other TV shows including Celebrity Squares (Channel 10), The Don Lane Show (Channel 9), Hey Hey It’s Saturday (Channel 9). Various television performances in Europe and the UK include Des O’Connor Tonight (ITV), Olivier Awards (BBC), Talking Telephone Numbers (ITV), GMTV (ITV), Sin on Saturday with Oliver Reed (BBC), The David Essex Show (ITV), The Kelly Show (Ulster Television), and she was chosen to be featured in a documentary film called Stars and Their Dressing Rooms (LWT). In Sept/Oct 2006, Chrissie was invited to reform her band Cheetah with sister Lyndsay to tour Australia with the Countdown Spectacular Concert Tour. The concerts were filmed and broadcast by the ABC and a live DVD and CD have been released. EMI has also released a compilation DVD and CD including early performances and recordings. Throughout her career Chrissie has continued to work as a writer and session vocalist and can be heard on numerous adverts and albums by various artists.
